The pharmaceutical giant Pfizer recently made a new development with the drug Chantix or Varenicline. This drug provides smokers with a miraculous aid to help control their cravings and successfully quit smoking in just one try. The FDA approved Chantix on May 11, 2006 and it has already shown that it is much more superior than any other drugs on the market for quitting smoking.

Precise parts of the brain are targeted by Chantix which helps people stop smoking by giving them the same satisfaction that they get from nicotine and lessening the withdrawal symptoms in the process. It also prevents the pertinent parts of the brain from absorbing nicotine so that smokers do not feel their normal reward from smoking.

Six clinical trials have confirmed the success of Chantix in helping individuals quit smoking. A total of 3,659 chronic smokers were involved in the study. In five of the six studies the clinical trials proved that Chantix was greater to placebos in helping individuals to stop smoking. Previously most of the smokers in the trial had smoked 21 cigarettes a day for about 25 years. Two of the five studies compared Chantix to Zyban, another drug for smokers, and was proven to be far more effective.

Chantix is taken orally through a capsule. A doctor will typically prescribe a treatment course of Chantix which is 0.5 mg once a day for 1 to 3 days, then 0.5 mg twice a day for the next 4 to 7 days and finally 1 mg twice a day for 12 weeks. Although for some smokers it may be necessary to have a longer treatment period of Chantix.

Side Effects

Nicotine is so addictive that many individuals come to depend on it both physically and mentally. Chantix is a new treatment option that helps ease the withdrawal symptoms that prevent most from quitting smoking. The success of this drug has been clearly proved. It may very well be the perfect non-traumatic way to quit smoking as long as individuals follow proper dosing, monitoring of contraindications and information of side effects. The most common side effects linked to Chantix include nausea, headache, problems with sleeping and changes in dreams.

Benefits

Chantix is specifically formatted to help individuals stop smoking. Precise parts of the brain are targeted by this drug which helps individuals to stop smoking. This medication also has the major benefit of helping to ease the difficult withdrawal symptoms of those who are trying to quit smoking. It does this by preventing the brain from providing the reward sensation that individuals get when smoking. Essentially it blocks the effects of nicotine.
