Having an independent life for people with disabilities is a difficult process, especially if you are child having to manoeuvre with your wheelchair. Finding the right mobility equipment is a challenging mission for parents, as not all products are suitable for young people. The kinds of equipment needed should be able to assist with the child's development, in terms of allowing the child to work the muscles that need to be worked in the same way as an able bodied child.

The types of mobility equipment will include things like scooter boards, trainer walkers, swivel walkers, attendant propelled wheelchairs and many more. Some of this equipment is specially designed to help the child to develop in the normal rate that they should develop. There are systems that support a child's seating position on buggies, pushchairs and prams. For young children there are things like straps, harnesses, wedged and sloping cushioned to keep the child at a comfortable position.

Some parents may not know what some of the mobility equipment is used for; however, companies that manufacture them are able to assist their clients into picking the right sort of equipment, in order to allow the user to use them with ease and comfort. Things like a scooter board, is used for children to propel themselves across the floor using their arms. The idea is that they lie on their front; the board will support their front body and legs allowing their arms to be free for manoeuvring.

You can buy affordable boards online; however, it is best to approach the manufacturing companies in order to find one, which is the right size for your child. Shorter boards are good for children who are slightly more physically able. Trainer walkers are good for children developing towards walking independently. Like normal strollers and walkers these support the back, however they focus on correcting the posture and positioning when strolling. There is additional seating. Support for the forearm and extra pads and straps.

Swivels walkers require a specialist to help fit your child into the equipment, as these are designed to help the user to use their upper body to manoeuvre. Some children are not able to walk using their leg strength, so the walking process is done by using the upper body. The swivel walker allows the child to move with ease without it becoming a cumbersome procedure. These are recommended to children with spinal bifida, muscular dystrophy and paraplegia.

In order to find the right mobility equipment for children, sometimes it is better to approach a specialist in this field as they may need measuring, customizing and fitting. These are not universally sized and will need plenty of adjustment. Always approach a medical physician or research on the internet reading up on forums and reading up on other peoples testimonials.
