Do you see red itchy ring like patches on your skin? Is your kid complaining of itchy bumps on the scalp? These are the common symptoms of Ringworm. Quite away from the name, this infection of skin is caused by Fungi which lives in humans and animals and rarely in soil.

The fungi likes moist places on our body such as between toes, thighs and scalp. This is not a serious condition and mostly easy to cure in 4 weeks. The treatment is given according to the area of infection.

There are topical medications in the forms of cream and powders available over the counter. Or the pharmacist should suggest one with miconazole and clotrimazole. Even a Fungrx cream will do, they all have to be applied externally on the infected area.

Ringworm and Children

The technical term for common infection in children is Tinea Corporis and very common in kids between age four and six. Like adults, topical medication is available. However oral anti fungal medication is available by prescription only. Griseofulvin, an pleasant oral liquid suspension is effective and has been in use for nearly five decades now. It may take 6-8 weeks to cure.

In adults, Tinea Capitis or infection of the scalp can be treated with special shampoos available over the counter at the pharmacy. Or an oral Griseofulvin can be administered too. You could always combine a topical anti fungal medication to go with it.

The feet infection or Tinea Pedis can also be cured with oral griseofulvin. Avoid shoes and go for sandals and make sure you discard the old socks thoroughly.

If your nails have gone hard and colorless, oral terbinafine should be given daily. In case of toes for about 12 weeks and in case of finger nails for 6 weeks.

A word of caution : if it does not respond to home remedy, doctors help is recommended. Physicians normally put you on stronger medication or antibiotics after initial diagnosis. Sometimes a corticosteroid cream may be prescribed.

It is important not to touch or scratch the infected area and to change into fresh clothes daily. Keep the skin clean and dry at all times. Sleep on clean sheets. In case of kids exclude them from school to avoid spreading.

Other things to keep in mind is not to touch or scratch the infected area and to change into fresh clothes daily. Try and keep the infected area clean and dry at all times and always sleep on clean sheets. Keeping the children away from school until the treatment is finished is advisable.
